JANUARY 1, 1863

People who owned enslaved folks were given the responsibility of telling them they were officially free. Those who owned enslaved folks did a REALLY f***ed up thing and didn’t tell them. Like we said REAL EFFED UP.

JUNE 19, 1865

Union soldiers arrived to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, truly freeing those that were enslaved.

The first Juneteenth (lowkey) celebration went down in 1866, but folks had issues gathering with segregation laws limiting locations to come together.

JUNE 19, 1872

Formerly enslaved folks pooled together $800 to buy 10 acres of land in Houston, TX to celebrate Juneteenth right - this area later named “Emancipation Park”.
